Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State, one of the major oil producing states in Nigeria has insisted that it is not possible for his government to pay full salaries of state workers again.
The governor revealed this when he met with members of Bayelsa Elders Forum in Yenagoa. His position was disclosed in a statement from the state’s Ministry of Information and Orientation on Saturday.
He also urged the elders to prevail on the civil servants from their different localities to understand the state’s predicament and accept the ongoing payment arrangement.
“In the area of public service, I appeal to the elders to be part of the discussions by engaging civil servants from their localities to accept the ongoing payment pattern as government at this point cannot pay full salaries.
“Some of the major challenges our government is facing is dwindling revenue and security. We call for collaboration to ensure law and order in all the local government areas in the state,” the statement said.

Bayelsa government is said to have since February 2016, been paying workers in the state 50 per cent salaries.
The state government is blaming the fall in oil price and the activities of militants in the region as the cause of its present predicament.
The government had on Friday, during its monthly transparency briefing in Yenagoa, claimed that militants’ attacks on oil installations had reduced the state revenue from N3bn in July, 2016 to N1bn in August, 2016.
