Reps postpone Dogara/Jibrin fireworks over colleague's death

The House of Representatives, after an eight-week recess, failed to resume plenary on Tuesday due to the death of Mr Elijah Oluwatayo, a lawmaker from Lagos State.

Mr Yakubu Dogara, Speaker, House of Representatives who read a letter from the family of the deceased lawmaker, disclosed that Oluwatayo died on July 20, 2016, at the age of 66.

Dogara further announced the death of three former members of the House, Muhammed Useni, Alex Eze and Etim Atakpa.

According to him, Useni represented Makarfi Federal Constituency of Kaduna State from 1999 to 2003, Eze represented Nsukka/Igboeze Constituency of Enugu State within the same period, while Atakpa represented Ikot Ekpene/Essien Udim/Obot Akara Federal constituency of Akwa Ibom from 1992 to 1993 on the platform of the defunct National Republican Convention.

Dogara said, “As a serving member is involved and as the tradition of the House demands, we have to adjourn sitting till Wednesday to honour the deceased.”

Many Nigerians had expected some form of clash between the lawmakers as they resume, over allegations of budget padding against the leadership by Abdulmumin Jibrin.

The lawmakers of the lower legislative chamber have been thrown into different camps over the allegations, with each side plotting against the other, and seeking to perfect their plots as plenary resumes.
